Vinkovci, 4th of February 2014 – "The import-export balance of Croatia's agriculture is 700 million dollars negative year after year which the total balance of Croatia's economy cannot bear", highlighted Petar Baranović, parliamentary representative of CPP and member of the parliamentary Committee for agriculture on a public discussion titled "Croatia's agriculture - yesterday, today, tomorrow".
"This is unacceptable for a country which has the potential to produce more food than it needs", continued CPP's representative.
The agriculture of the future must be more reliant on agroeconomics and principles of economic management, and less on state and EU support, agreed all of the participants in a lively and constructive debate. CPP sees opportunities in the consolidation of agricultural land, the unification of producers and the rounding of agricultural production.
"The bad trends in Croatia's agriculture, in the past two decades are a result of the work of all of Croatia's governments, so it is high time we dedicated ourselves maximally to reform. Otherwise, a large part of the bearers of agricultural production, especially family-run economies will come into a hopeless situation", warned Baranović.
"CPP's ambition is a more dominant opening of subjects which include recommendations and concrete solutions in critical years for Croatia's agriculture, with special engagement in vukovarsko-srijemska County", added the head of the County's CPP and host of the event Mario Jozanović.
On a discussion which has caused a great deal of interest from participants it was concluded that a maximum common engagement of experts, politics and science is necessary which can effect positive changes and adaptations to new conditions of entering the EU and conditions in the market. Otherwise, we will face an apilogue of a social drama, not only for Slavonia as an agricultural region, but on the national level as well.
The discussion was held in the organisation of CPP's Political Academy, its 2nd Department for additional education in general politics and CPP's vukovarsko-srijemska organisation.
CPP's parliamentary representative has made three tours of COs and held a public discussion on such an important subject. Baranović has spoken about Croatia's agriculture in Požega, Osijek and Vinkovci.
