elf logoZagreb, 1st June 2015 – Organized by the ELF and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, in Belgrade from 26th to 27th May was held a seminar "Accountability and Politics: Political Legitimacy - the power of information" for which CPP's Academy received an invitation.

All attendees at the interesting and useful lectures have tried to find answers to questions that are today more topical than ever. They discussed the representation of public interest, political accountability, and the new political culture in the light of the commercialization of the media, the twilight of serious investigative journalism and the dominance of social networks and digital content.

The seminar started with an introduction by Jürgen Martens and Charles du Vinage with emphasis on the responsibility of politicians and the media's role, both in Europe and in our region. Lejla Ibranović of Transparency Bosnia and Herzegovina put the emphasis on corruption in the media, a phenomenon that is very difficult to prove, and which has a great influence on the formation of public opinion. Irena Djuric of CRTA Serbia spoke about projects that aim to open and transparently approach the work of institutions to citizens and thus enable control of civil society, while Slobodan Georgiev, journalist of BIRN spoke from the perspective of the profession on the phenomenon of the disappearance of independent media and the future focus on individuals to whom people can trust, instead of the media that people can trust to. Also, Georgjev touched some important issues such as the role of owners of media, editorial policy and journalists themselves who, in fear for their job, sacrifice ideals for safety.

Furthermore, representatives of Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina participated in the great discussion. Examples from their own countries as well as concrete questions have contributed to dynamic and successful Cafe World afternoon.

During Word Cafe they discussed the issues of how and in what way to keep a majority government responsible, how to represent the public interest outside the parliament, that is the structure of representative democracy and at the end how to introduce a new political culture and what should it be anyway?

Despite the great debate and a number of reasoned solutions, from extremely abstract to extremely concrete, some of the topics simply could not be concluded. That refers to the new political culture, which was eventually classified as a philosophical category.

Regardless of the expected lack of concrete solutions seminar has produced the desired effect and clearly showed how liberals think in the region. Despite certain differences, directions and visions of liberals in the region are common, regardless of the problems of each country in particular.

The "Accountability and Politics" has once again justified its existence and made it clear that such seminars are essential and that it is necessary to intensify cooperation in the region, especially with the Croatian experience of the EU member state and the wishes of other neighboring countries to become members of the same.

CPP's Political Academy, was more than perfect represented by Jug Puljizević, an associate at the Central Office, a member of the Presidency of CPP's Zagrebačka county organization and president of subsidiary Samobor.
