virovitica liberalizam 2014Virovitica, 25th of September 2014 – "The referendum proposed by the civil association "On behalf of the family" is political adventurism and an attempt to manipulate the public for personal interest", said Boris Blažeković, head of the Academy and the CPP's Member of Parliament at a press conference in Virovitica.

"The referendum has nothing to do with preferential voting; rather it is an attempt to lower the electoral threshold for entry into the Parliament in order to increase the chances of success of a certain person. Problems of the electoral system are serious and complex and require a wide discussion in the public, while a consensus of major parties is prerequisite for any significant change", added Blažeković.

"The CPP leans towards the reform proposal of GONG, however, there are parts of their proposal that are not acceptable", concluded Blažeković.

"Competitiveness index of Virovitičko-podravska County indicates that it is on the fifth place according to the development of the business infrastructure, while being dead last according to the level of entrepreneurship and investment, which opens many questions. What is our County actually doing in the area of infrastructure?", said Marijan Rengel, the President of the Virovitičko-podravska County Organization of the CPP.

After the press conference, Blažeković participated in a public forum on "Liberalism and the position of the CPP in Croatia", where he talked about the basic ideas of liberalism, stereotypes surrounding it and other liberal issues. A particular emphasis was given to highlighting the relation between liberal policies and the individual, liberal policies and the civil society, liberal policies and the state, as well as liberal views on international relations.

"Without liberalism, there would not be the freedom that prevails in the modern world, though responsibility comes with this freedom. Through education and adoption of proper values, we can raise the awareness on these freedoms and responsibilities", added the head of the Academy.

While focusing on presenting the basic principles of liberal policies towards the individual and his basic rights, Blažeković also analysed the position of the CPP in Croatia, adding that the state must remain in the service of the individual.

"An individual is naturally free with certain basic rights, which is why liberals think everything must be secondary in relation to the imperative of enabling that same individual to practice his rights within a political community", said Blažeković.

"From the very beginning, the CPP has been a liberal party, though continuing to build values within parties is important as are these forums. It is the responsibility of all parties to provide the people the knowledge, resources and energy so that they can use their knowledge and skills to elevate themselves above the apathy that is prevalent in our society and engage themselves to change things for the better", continued Blažeković.

The head of the Academy concluded that freedom of thought and expression as well as a free market economy is the foundation of liberalism. According to Blažeković, we are in the current economic crisis because we gave up on the principles of liberalism.

The President of the Virovitičko-podravska County Organization of the CPP Marijan Rengel highlighted the importance of respecting human rights and freedoms, while adding that the CPP as a liberal party has the task of broadening support and awareness for development of a liberal democratic society.

The host of the event was Monika Ladović, the President of the CPP's subsidiary of Virovitica. The event was held as a part of the activities of the Second Department of the Political Academy of the CPP in cooperation with the Virovitičko-podravska County Organization of the CPP.
