pozega EU webPožega, 23rd of December 2013 – CPP's Požega branch has held a seminar as part of the 1st Department of the Academy titled "Preparations for the EU elections". The seminar was led by Damir Kovačević, president of the Požega branch.

Kovačević started his lecture with a short introduction about Croatian legislature for the EU elections in order to explain the structure, acting and work of the EU parliament, as well as the work of the ALDE party in the continuation.

As he said, the ALDE party is a party representing liberal-democratic values in Europe. Together with national liberal parties across the European continent it carries out the principles of freedom and responsibility in politics, the economy and all other areas of life. It gathers members of the European parliament from the ranks of liberal member parties and together with the Parliament members from the European democratic party makes the third largest political force in the parliament.

In the continuation, Kovačević said that on the forthcoming EU elections in Croatia eleven representatives will be elected, unlike the last elections, where there were twelve. He also highlighted the importance of preferential voting.

"The preferred votes for individual candidates are taken into account of the number of preferred votes of an individual candidate amount to at least 10% of votes which an individual list has won. The candidates elected are the ones from each candidate list which have won the largest number of preferential votes", said Kovačević highlighting that we have seen what that means well on the last EU parliament elections.

"The liberal option was sadly left without its representative in the EU parliament on the last elections and that is something that we will have to correct", highlighted the president of the Požega branch.

The seminar ended with a discussion about the qualities which EU parliamentary candidates should have. Here Kovačević highlighted that they should be the same as with candidates for the national parliament.

The Požega branch has finished this year's educations with this held seminar and plans to hold its next educations in the middle of January.
